Why Weligama

Surf Lessons in Weligama

for First-Timers & Beyond

If you’ve never surfed before, Weligama Bay is the place to start. It’s a wide, shallow, sandy-bottom bay with gentle rolling waves — widely considered the best beginner surf beach in Sri Lanka, and where most people on the south coast catch their very first wave.

Surf lessons in Weligama work so well because the bay does half the job for you. The waves break softly over sand (not reef), they roll in slowly, and there’s a long stretch of white water that’s perfect for practising your pop-up and standing up safely. With Viji guiding you in the water, most complete beginners are riding waves to the beach on day one.

What makes the difference here isn’t the wave — it’s the coaching. Instead of being pushed into a wave and left to figure it out, you get real-time feedback after every attempt: where to lie on the board, when to paddle, how to time your pop-up, and how to read which wave to go for. That’s how progress happens fast.

With a 5.0 rating across 162 Google reviews, Viji is one of the south coast’s most trusted independent surf coaches. Students describe him as patient, encouraging and brilliant at reading the bay — always putting you on the right part of the beach for your level on the day.

Why Weligama

The Best Surf Spots in Weligama

Weligama Bay is one big, forgiving learner beach, but it surfs differently from corner to corner. Viji picks the right zone each session based on tide, swell size and your level.
Beginner

Weligama Bay (Main Beach)

Long sandy-bottom beach break with mellow, rolling white water. The classic spot to learn to surf in Sri Lanka.

Beginner

The Western Corner

Sheltered end near the headland. Cleaner, smaller waves — ideal on bigger days or for nervous first-timers.

Intermediate

Plantation / Bay Reef

On bigger swells the outside of the bay offers longer, greener walls for surfers ready to move past the white water.

Intermediate

Weligama Point

A right-hander off the eastern side that works on the right swell — a natural next step before heading to the Midigama reefs.

Ready for green waves and reef? Once you’re comfortable in Weligama Bay, the reef breaks at Midigama are a 10-minute tuk-tuk away — Viji can build a progression plan that takes you from the sand here to your first reef wave there.

The location

Getting to Weligama & Best Time to Surf

Best time of year for surf lessons in Weligama

The main surf season on Sri Lanka’s south coast runs from November to April. Through these months the offshore winds blow clean and the south swells arrive steady, which is exactly what you want for learning. The water sits around 27–28°C all year, so there’s no wetsuit — just board shorts or a rash vest. Weligama Bay is well sheltered, so it stays beginner-friendly even on bigger days when the open beaches get messy.

How to reach Weligama Bay

Weligama is right on the south coast highway (A2), about 30 minutes from Galle and 2.5 hours from Colombo or the airport by car. It’s the biggest surf town on this stretch, with its own railway station, plenty of tuk-tuks and easy connections to Mirissa (15 min) and Midigama (10 min). Viji will arrange a meeting point or pickup when you book.

WHERE TO STAY

Weligama has the widest range of places to stay on the south coast — surf hostels, guesthouses and boutique hotels, many within walking distance of the bay. It also has the best choice of cafes, restaurants and transport links, which is why a lot of travellers base themselves here and day-trip to the nearby reef breaks.
