Midigama Spots
Surfing a reef break for the first time can feel intimidating, but Midigama is one of the most forgiving places to do it. Lazy Right, in particular, breaks over a deep reef with long, cruisy rides — it’s far more relaxed than its name suggests and a great first reef wave once you’re comfortable standing up. Viji knows exactly where to sit you and when to go.
Unlike a big surf camp where you share a coach with six or eight others, every session here is built around you. You get in-water guidance, coaching on reading the reef and the tide, and honest feedback after each wave — with video analysis whenever you want to actually see what to fix.
A long, cruisy right-hander breaking over a deep reef. Mellow and forgiving — the best first reef wave in Midigama for confident beginners and improvers.
Small sandy-bottom beach break sections on the inside. Safe and gentle — handy for true first-timers before stepping onto reef.
The trickier sibling of Lazy Right. A punchier left over reef that rewards better wave selection and timing — a solid intermediate step-up.
Consistent reef with long, workable walls. Great for practising carving, generating speed and reading sections at intermediate level.
Midigama's heavy hitter — a powerful, shallow reef break and one of the hardest waves in the region. Strictly for confident, experienced surfers.
Never surfed before? Start in the sandy bay at Weligama (10 minutes away) to nail your pop-up first, then Viji will bring you to Lazy Right for your first taste of reef. It’s the ideal progression.
Once you can stand up, Lazy Right is the perfect introduction to reef. Learn line-up positioning, take-off timing and reef safety with Viji beside you.
Green-wave surfing, cutbacks, bottom turns and reading reef sections at Lazy Left and Plantations. Where most people make their biggest jump.
One-on-one focus with Viji. The quickest route to progress on reef — tailored entirely to your goals, with no distractions.
Experienced surfer wanting to tackle Rams or sharpen technique on powerful reef? Viji coaches positioning, commitment and safety on heavier waves.
Add video analysis to any session — watch your own surfing back and get precise, timestamped feedback on your stance, weight distribution, timing and wave selection. Viji also covers the theory that makes a real difference in Midigama: reading the swell, how the tide changes the wave, surf etiquette in the line-up and staying safe over the reef.

The main surf season on Sri Lanka’s south coast runs from November to April. Through these months the offshore winds blow clean and the south swells arrive steady, which is exactly what you want for learning. The water sits around 27–28°C all year, so there’s no wetsuit — just board shorts or a rash vest. Midigama’s reefs can also pick up good surf outside peak season when the right swell window lines up.
Midigama sits on the south coast highway (A2) between Weligama (about 10 minutes by tuk-tuk) and Ahangama (about 10 minutes). From Galle it’s roughly 40 minutes. Most students stay in Weligama or Ahangama and tuk-tuk over for their session — Viji can arrange pickup from your accommodation when you book.
Midigama itself is laid-back, with surf hostels and guesthouses within walking distance of the reefs — a favourite with surfers who want to roll out of bed and into the water. For more restaurants, cafes and nightlife, Weligama is the closest larger town, just up the road.
