madiha Spots
Madiha’s waves are reef breaks — a left and a right that peel cleanly on the right swell and tide. They’re more suited to intermediate and advanced surfers than complete first-timers, which is exactly why personal coaching here is so valuable: Viji puts you in the right spot, reads the tide for you and helps you make the most of every wave in an uncrowded setting.
Each session is built entirely around you — no sharing a coach with a big group. You get hands-on, in-water guidance, coaching on reef positioning and wave selection, an honest debrief after every surf, and optional video analysis so you can see and lock in your progress.
Madiha is only about 10 minutes from Weligama, so if you’re a complete beginner, Viji can start you on Weligama’s gentle sandy bay first and bring you to Madiha’s reef as you improve. With a 5.0 rating from 162 reviews, you’re learning with one of the south coast’s most trusted coaches.
A calmer, reef-sheltered bay close by, useful for gentle early practice — though Weligama remains the best true-beginner option.
A clean left-hand reef break that peels nicely on the right swell. A great wave for intermediates working on longer rides and turns.
A punchier right-hand reef that can get hollow and fast — best suited to confident, experienced surfers.
New to surfing? Madiha’s reefs are best once you can already stand up and ride green waves. For your first lessons, the sandy bay at Weligama is just a 10-minute, ~$2–3 tuk-tuk away and far easier — Viji can start you there and progress you onto Madiha’s reef when you’re ready.
Brand new? Viji starts you on the safe sandy bay at nearby Weligama, then brings you to Madiha as you gain confidence.
Reef positioning, take-off timing, trimming and turns on Madiha Left. The level Madiha's waves are made for.
One-on-one with Viji in an uncrowded line-up — the fastest, most focused way to step up your reef surfing.
Experienced surfer? Sharpen your technique on the faster Madiha Right and make the most of a quiet, quality reef.
Add video analysis to any session — watch your own surfing back and get precise, timestamped feedback on your stance, weight distribution, timing and wave selection. Viji also covers the theory that makes a real difference in Madiha: reading the swell, how the tide changes the wave, surf etiquette in the line-up and staying safe over the reef.

The main surf season on Sri Lanka’s south coast runs from November to April. Through these months the offshore winds blow clean and the south swells arrive steady, which is exactly what you want for learning. The water sits around 27–28°C all year, so there’s no wetsuit — just board shorts or a rash vest. Madiha’s reefs need the right swell and tide, so Viji checks the forecast and times your session for the best conditions.
Madiha sits just west of Matara on the south coast, about 10 minutes from Weligama by tuk-tuk and around 40 minutes from Galle. It’s quieter than the main surf towns, which is part of its charm. Viji will arrange a meeting point or pickup from your accommodation when you book.
Madiha and nearby Polhena have a growing number of guesthouses and small surf stays, with Matara close by for more amenities. Many surfers base themselves in Weligama for the wider choice of food and transport and ride the short distance to Madiha’s quieter reefs.
