Why Ahangama
Surf Lessons in Ahangama
With a Personal Coach
The wave most people learn on here is Marshmallows — a slow, soft reef break that’s about as gentle as a reef gets, perfect for longboarding and finding your feet. As you improve, spots like Sticks and Gas Stations open up longer, more rippable walls, and when there’s swell, the Kabalana area turns on for advanced surfers.
The advantage of learning with Viji rather than a packed surf camp is simple: it’s just you (or a small group), and the session moves at your pace. You get hands-on coaching in the water, guidance on reading Ahangama’s reefs and tides, a debrief after every session, and optional video analysis so you can actually see your progress.
Why Ahangama
The Best Surf Spots in Ahangama
Marshmallows
A slow, soft reef break and the most beginner-friendly wave in Ahangama. Ideal for longboarding and learning to ride a proper unbroken wave.
Sticks
A fun, mellow-to-punchy reef that's a natural next step for improvers working on take-offs, trimming and their first turns.
Gas Stations
Longer, workable reef walls when the swell is up — great for intermediates building speed and linking sections.
Kabalana / The Rock
Ahangama's powerful beach-and-reef peak. A heavier, faster wave that's strictly for confident, experienced surfers.
Kabalana Beach
Sandy beach-break sections on smaller days — a softer option for early beginners before moving onto reef.
Brand new to surfing? Marshmallows is gentle, but the easiest possible start is the sandy bay at Weligama (about 20 minutes away). Viji can start you there and progress you onto Ahangama’s reefs as your confidence grows.

The location
Getting to Ahangama & Best Time to Surf
Best time of year for surf lessons in Ahangama
The main surf season on Sri Lanka’s south coast runs from November to April. Through these months the offshore winds blow clean and the south swells arrive steady, which is exactly what you want for learning. The water sits around 27–28°C all year, so there’s no wetsuit — just board shorts or a rash vest. Ahangama’s spread of spots means there’s almost always somewhere working for your level during the season.
How to reach Ahangama
Ahangama is on the south coast highway (A2), about 25 minutes east of Galle and roughly 10 minutes from Midigama. It has its own train station on the scenic coastal line and is easy to reach by tuk-tuk from anywhere along the coast. Viji will sort out a meeting point or pickup from your accommodation when you book.
WHERE TO STAY
Ahangama has boomed with stylish surf hostels, villas and cafes, especially around the Kabalana and main beach areas. It’s a great base if you want a surf-town vibe with good food, and it’s only a short ride to the Midigama reefs and Weligama’s beginner bay.
